Oh, No Thanks, I'll Just Use Paper And Pencil
I CAN'T??? WHY NOT???
The average deaf person graduating from a school for the Deaf, typically has the English skills of a grade schooler. American Sign Language (ASL) is the first and primary language taught to Deaf students. Since this language is not a spoken or written language, it looks very different on paper and creates the real probability for miscommunication.
As you read the following paragraph written by Elizabeth I Baird, published in an unknown magazine, see how well you understand what the author is saying:
"People you all read my ASL, write, laugh laugh laugh HA HA HA. Right me talk? Think funny? Polite not. Hearing people ( and, and worse happen, many some think-hearing Deaf people, know-all, do-act-think-smart, head big) laugh laugh laugh HA HA HA and sometimes mock mock mock fun of us born Deaf funny write. Polite zero. That why Deaf people not want write ASL".
Ms Baird is telling us why some Deaf people do not want to write back and forth.
